Sweet and Spicy Dipping Sauce
This flavorful sauce is delicious for dipping dumplings, spring rolls and more, and you can prepare it with less sodium than many prepared sauces.
Servings: 10
Note: If you are cooking for a particular style of eating, please check all of your ingredients carefully.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup minced onion
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1/2 cup mirin
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 4 tablespoons sake
- 1/2 cup coconut aminos
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1-2 tablespoons sriracha (see notes)
Instructions
- Cook onion in oil until tender. Stir in garlic and cook briefly. Add mirin, sugar, sake and coconut aminos. Simmer 20 minutes.

- Mix water and cornstarch. Add to the pan and heat to a simmer. Simmer, stirring constantly, for one minute.

- Stir in sriracha. If you want to use the dipping sauce in a squirt bottle, blend with an immersion blender to remove chunks.

Notes
If you are watching sodium, check and compare the labels when shopping for coconut aminos and siracha because the amount of sodium in these products varies.ย ย
I recommend starting with one tablespoon of sriracha and then tasting before adding more.ย You can accommodate different tastes by dividing the sauce before adding the sriracha and making some of the sauce more or less spicy.
For cooking purposes, I like to buy sake in a four or six pack of single serve cans or bottles.ย That way I can open a small amount when needed for cooking.
This flavor combination also makes a great stir fry sauce.ย Increase the water to 1 cup, and increase the cornstarch to 1 1/2 tablespoons.ย I also published the stir fry sauce variation as a separate recipe (linked below).ย ย If you have made the Sweet and Spicy Dipping Sauce add have some in your fridge, you can thin it with water and use it for stir fry.
