Instructions
Mix together flour, salt, baking powder, cream of tartar, sugar and dry milk.
Mix in shortening with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture has the texture of coarse meal.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or a cooler.
When ready to use the biscuit mix, put the desired amount of biscuit mix into a bowl, and gradually add cold water, stirring with a fork, until the mixture forms a soft dough.
Butter the Pudgy Pie Maker. Press a thin layer of dough on both sides of the Pudgy Pie Maker. Top one side with shredded cheese.
Close the Pudgy Pie Maker and put it into the hot coals of your campfire.
Peek inside the Pudgy PIe Maker occasionally. When the biscuit is golden brown, remove from the fire and enjoy.
Notes
The biscuit mix can be used to make biscuits as well. You can roll out the dough and use a biscuit cutter, but this is casual cooking, so you may want to simply roll the dough into balls, place them on a greased cookie sheet, and flatten slightly with your palm.Cooking over a campfire is always an experiment because you can't set a fixed oven temperature. For the Pudgy Pies, you want hot coals rather than a flaming hot fire, and you will want to flip the Pudgy Pie maker during cooking. Check occasionally to see when it is ready.
