The Role of Strength Training and Foods Rich in Protein in Maintaining Good Health

If you read my Big Q’s page, then you probably saw that I think most people would benefit from strength training.  I recently focused more on the value of strength training for adults after I saw an article in Time magazine about Gabrielle Lyon, a physician with a background in geriatrics.  As summarized in Time, Lyon teaches that strong muscles help adults maintain their balance, mobility and independence, and preserving strength can help people remain healthier longer.

I consulted with strength and conditioning coach Thomson Remo.  You can learn more about Thomson at thomsonremo.com.

Thomson also promotes strength training for adults.  He says that when muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues are exposed to appropriate resistance consistently, they become stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to support efficient movement.  He says that strength training challenges the muscles responsible for stabilizing the spine, hips, shoulders, and trunk. At the same time, strength training causes the connective tissues surrounding those joints to adapt by increasing their capacity to tolerate load. Consistent strength work leads to standing taller, moving with greater confidence, and maintaining the strength and structural support needed for everyday activities.

Thomson highlights the importance of combining strength training with eating sufficient amounts of protein because protein supports tissue adaptation, recovery, and building functional physical reserve.

Below are links to some of my recipes that contain good sources of protein.  In next week’s post, I will focus on some ideas for a quick and elegant breakfast featuring protein.
