Hamburger Salad
This salad is all about your choices. Choose a burger of beef or turkey, or choose a plant-based burger. Then add your choice of toppings. There is no limit to the interesting, delicious salads you can create.

Ingredients
- 1-2 cups green leaf lettuce or other greens
- meat or plant-based burger
- your choice of toppings
Instructions
- Put lettuce on a plate and add your choice of cold burger toppings, such as tomatoes, raw onion, pickles or avocado.

- Fry hot toppings, such as sweet red peppers, mushrooms, onions or bacon.

- Onion

- Cook burger and add cheese, if you wish, such as cheddar, Swiss, gouda or pepper jack.

- Place burger on salad and top with hot toppings. Add condiments, such as mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and spicy mayo.
- Variation: Burger with gouda cheese, shitake mushrooms, sweet red peppers and mayonnaise

- Variation: Burger with cheddar cheese, corn and salsa

Notes
For the perfect cooked onions for a burger, cut onions into pieces.ย Starting with a large onion, I like to quarter the onion and then slice each quarter into thin slices.ย Cook the onion in oil on medium high heat until the onion starts to brown.ย Then turn the heat to medium and cook until the onion is tender but still has texture–sort of like al dente for pasta.
Be creative with the toppings.ย Pickles, ketchup and mustard may be the first to come to mind.ย Keep thinking, whether you are using ingredients you have on hand or shopping for something new.ย Consider using whatever cheese you have in your fridge, such as brie or goat cheese.ย Consider barbecue sauce, coleslaw, grilled pineapple, or onion rings.ย How about mozzarella cheese and pizza sauce on your burger?
Consider cooking extra burgers and storing them individually-wrapped in the freezer.ย You can quickly heat one to add to a salad.ย If using cheese, add the cheese toward the end of the reheating time.
